Future Logistics
“With SmartTurn, our administrative costs have continued to fall, both against revenue, and in real terms, as the API functionality earns its keep over and over.”
- Paul Carton - Director, Future Logistics
Company Overview
Future Logistics is a Melbourne, Australia-based third-party logistics (3PL) provider. It services small to medium companies that expect an individual approach to niche and non-inventory products, ranging from camping goods to clothes, and food products to footwear. Given the size of Australia, with hundreds of kilometers between the state capitals, Future Logistics also supports a national field service infrastructure. Aside from Australia, the.clients are based in New Zealand, Canada & Malaysia
The Challenge - Cost-Effective Inventory Visibility for International Clients
“Our previous WMS was an excellent, heavily modified but poorly documented DOS-based program, at the end of its life”, said Paul Carton, Director at Future Logistics, “our challenge was to source a cost-effective new product, incorporating a broad range of standard features, simple implementation, and most importantly, a browser-based solution that could offer our local and international clients seamless visibility of their inventory and orders.”
Future Logistics required the following features:
In addition, the company had “one Client who imported 15,000 to 20,000 pre-packed cartons per year, each of which is customer specific,” explained Carton", and we had to convert orders into shipments immediately with accurate pick rates”.
Finding a Solution With SmartTurn
It was clear Future Logistics needed an updated warehouse management system (WMS) to keep up with client expectations. The search took the team far and wide, but SmartTurn proved to be a clear favorite.“When we were looking for an upgrade to our DOS based WMS, we wanted to avoid the hardware and administrative overheads of Server/PC solutions, so we restricted our search to feature rich, browser-based products”, said Carton, “and SmartTurn was the clear winner. With SmartTurn, our administrative costs have continued to fall, both against revenue, and in real terms, as the API functionality earns its keep over and over.”Moving onto the specific features of SmartTurn, Carton was enthusiastic in expanding some of its benefits: “SmartTurn's turnkey features were a ready-made solution for all our requirements.
As importantly, SmartTurn's browser was intuitive, enabling users to find functions, and learn without having to understand unnecessary complexity. ”SmartTurn has also added greater flexibility for the operations team at Future Logistics. We have almost entirely eliminated order entry as an actual job”, said Carton, “Selected operational staff is able to review imported orders from home and create picking batches, which are ready for picking when warehouse staff arrives”.
The Results - Winning New Clients
The updated WMS has led to significant savings, improved service for existing clients, and helped to secure new ones - therefore growing the business, as Carton disclosed: “Our newest client told us they wanted to outsource their previously manual spare parts operation by January 1st, 2019. As of January 1st, 320 products are now in our Warehouse, on SmartTurn, for them to enter around 30 orders from their office for same day dispatch, never before possible, while they complete the rollout of spare parts ordering onto their website, and we will be importing orders automatically within weeks”.
