“Based on our specific business requirements, SmartTurn’s on-demand system delivered the right combination of functionality with the necessary level of adaptability.”
- Philip Abernathy, Lead Technical Specialist at ThyssenKrupp Steel USA
ThyssenKrupp Steel USA LLC focuses on the production of premium carbon steel flat products. Unlike its competitors, the environmentally-friendly steelmaker maintains high technological competency and invests heavily in research and development in its high-quality manufacturing processes.ThyssenKrupp Steel USA was in the process of building a new steel plant which included a hot strip mill, a cold rolling mill, and hot dip coating lines. These mills would process slabs from the company’s Brazilian steel mill into premium carbon steel flat products.
The Challenge - Devising an Inventory Tracking System
Typically, tracking the thousands of inbound products and parts at the plant can be resource intensive and inaccurate. Since the U.S. business group was receiving items from a German-based supplier, ThyssenKrupp Steel USA faced a unique situation—receiving parts at the plant before the arrival of the actual shipping documents. This made the task of tracking items even more difficult especially in the case of missing or oversupplied parts. Therefore, ThyssenKrupp Steel USA needed to come up with a solution that would deliver:
Additionally, the manufacturer needed the ability to make notes and report discrepancies on packing lists with the numerous building contractors.
Inherently, an on-demand (also known as Software as a Service or SaaS) approach offers the degree of adaptability and agility that traditional enterprise software cannot.
Finding a Solution With SmartTurn
SmartTurn’s easy-to-use, web-based warehouse management system (WMS) breaks the traditional enterprise WMS software mold of expensive upfront license and consulting fees, lengthy deployment times, and ongoing maintenance costs. The company’s SaaS model provides a modern, secure Internet architecture that promotes connectivity to other systems (e.g. ERP and CRM) and pushing/pulling inventory from the warehouse.“When we began looking for a solution, our criteria focused on two attributes—dynamic and customizable,” said Philip Abernathy, Lead Technical Specialist at ThyssenKrupp Steel USA. “Based on our specific business requirements, SmartTurn’s on-demand system delivered the right combination of functionality with the necessary level of adaptability.”SmartTurn’s On-Demand Inventory and Warehouse Management Solution is a complete, full-featured system that offers real-time visibility without adding a lot of complexity to an organization’s existing business processes.“We can add, edit and create fields that allow us to search inventory on several different dimensions all within SmartTurn’s user-friendly interface,” said Abernathy. “We use the software to deliver, authenticate, and keep track of inventory received, distributed, and used in the building of the plant.”SmartTurn implementations are led by Customer Experience Managers (CEMs). They provide guidance with implementation, training and ongoing support. SmartTurn CEMs have extensive real-world, warehouse experience, providing a level of expertise uncommon to most software companies.“Customer support from SmartTurn has been excellent. Once the system was implemented, the CEM provides end-users with the proper training to get them up and running in no time. Any time there is an issue or problem, SmartTurn has been extremely prompt in finding the solution,” continued Abernathy.“One of the benefits of an on-demand approach is the automatic software updates. SmartTurn readily educates ThyssenKrupp on changes and upgrades and even provides notifications informing us of any hardware or software issues, which helps with planning on our end.”
The Results - Quick Implementation and 30,000 Transactions a Month
Abernathy was also impressed with the quick deployment and implementation of SmartTurn’s solution, which takes place in a matter of days rather than months, as seen with traditional enterprise WMS:“Deploying SmartTurn’s solution took five days to program the system for our needs. During this time, we were able to conduct various tests in the SmartTurn environment to see if our mapping was appropriate,” said Abernathy. “SmartTurn’s flexibility enabled us to configure processes to meet specific business challenges. More importantly, we were able to provide suggestions to SmartTurn that were incorporated into subsequent software updates.”The fast implementation enabled the manufacturer to quickly take advantage of the system, which delivered the following results:
In this case, speed and accuracy were of the essence. And SmartTurn’s inventory management system rose to the challenge.
