Based in Colorado Springs, USA Cycling is the official governing body for all disciplines of competitive cycling in the U.S. – road, track, mountain bike, BMX, and cyclo-cross. Recognized by the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) and Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), USA Cycling has more than 66,000 members and sanctions 2,600 events each year. The organization is responsible for identifying, selecting and training cyclists to represent the United States in international competition. The primary goal of USA Cycling is to ensure the ongoing development of and safe participation in the sport of cycling. Supporting more than 7,600 training and race days in 2009, USA Cycling plays a significant role in growing competitive cycling in the U.S. Membership increased by 5.6% in 2009 and has doubled in the past decade. The team consistently scores top-five finishes at the various World Cycling Championships and Olympic Games. A recent highlight was winning gold and silver in the inaugural BMX event at Rio 2016.
The Challenge - Moving Away From Spreadsheets
With success come growing pains, which USA Cycling faced as it looked to streamline its inventory management system within the increasing complexities of global logistics. USA Cycling needed an inventory management system that offered real-time visibility into fixed assets such as bicycles, wheels, and clothing. More importantly, the system would require minimal IT resources, while providing 24/7 accessibility from anywhere in the world, even on the race track.
Having no previous system in place, USA Cycling was starting from scratch when it came to inventory management. This was a logistical challenge since cyclists were at multiple sites around the world. “We had no formal inventory tracking system to speak of”, explained Gregory Cross, Director of Logistics and Operations, USA Cycling, "we were making decisions based on spreadsheets and receiving forms, which provided no real-time information or accuracy”. By moving away from spreadsheets, USA Cycling needed a solution to address the following challenges:
Finding a Solution With SmartTurn
USA Cycling began its search for a solution by mapping out its business processes, then evaluating those processes with inventory management solutions available. “SmartTurn worked with us in analyzing every step of our business process, showing how they fit in and add value.
